Studio Visitors

Priscilla came for a sewing day and Bill dropped by for a little chat.
Priscilla is working on a new jacket made from fabric from India.  The fabric is actually two saris that have been sewn together with rows and rows of hand stitching.  She’s constructing the front and back pieces and incorporating some other fabrics that she strip-pieced.

Jeanne Simpson came another day for sewing, and we explored possible shape designs and fabrics that we could use.  Her shibori dyed and discharged fabrics would work well with some commercial fabrics she had with her.
 This piece of fabric that Jeanne brought looks like it could have been hand-dyed, but it is a commercial fabric.

Fall Harvest

We have a wonderful crop of ornamental gourds this year.  A warm wet summer filled a garden cart on the first day of picking.

The second day brought out the tractor bucket.  The goose-neck crop was gathered.  Notice the one in front -- all neck and no goose!

 

This further contribution yielded a couple hundred

more.  We have one more day of a walk-through search for other gourds missed on the first pass.  We'll then clean them up and arrange some in-house displays.  A substantial number will be packaged as gifts for friends.

Other late harvest included tomatoes, beans, everbearing red raspberries, flowers for drying, and a few more gourds.  We will keep gathering the late crops until a killing frost.  We have some late-season spinach, basil and parsley to add to the schedule.

Fall Gardens

The Autumn clematis covers the garden pergola.  The wooden fence serves as a dividing structure between the grapes and raspberries, and the more formal perennial gardents.  The trimmed boxwood and variegated euonymous soften the effect.

The interior of the pergola provides seating for a rest and a nice view.  We have let the morning glories spread across the floor as well as climb the latticed walls.  They provide a nice touch of color.

The Japanese anemone are the stars of late blooming perennials.  They will last until a heavy frost and self-seed for next year.

This towering clump of perennial grass soars some 12 feet above the soft evergreen and dark red bayberry.  This other side of the perennial garden is kept in check  by a solid five-foot timber wall, which marks the demarkation point to more lawn and fenced pasture.

My quilts and my studio were selected for the "In The Art Studio" section of the current issue of Machine Quilting Unlimited.   Thanks to the editor and publisher for creating a lovely 4-page color layout.

And thanks to Priscilla, Jeanne, and Linda for posing for this picture of the studio so we could show how it looks when it's in use and to Pat for being our photographer.

SAQA Regional Meeting

SAQA (Studio Art Quilters Association) members in western NY met on the campus of SUNY Geneseo. From the left -- Nancy Hicks, Sharon Cunningham, Jeanne Beck, Marcia Eygabroat, and Bev Kondolf. Marcia is the SAQA rep for our area.


Introductions with Show & Tell and a discussion of what we'd like to accomplish within our local group were followed by lunch (and cookies!).

Then we toured our "Exquisite Corpse" exhibit in the Kinetic Gallery downstairs.

Pat Pauly presented a great lecture for the group on "Contemporary Quilts" and included several images of work done by members of the group.

Sewing Day

Ren, Linda, Priscilla and Pat are settled in for a full day's work. Bev and Jeanne S. are not in the picture, but were also hard at work.






Priscilla was working on finishing up another one of her wonderful jackets in kimono style. The main focal print is from Alexander Henry, and the jacket includes seminole piecing.


Ren brought in some of her collages to share. The center piece includes a picture of Ren when she had longer hair. The blue shapes at the bottom of the piece were created with paper that Ren made.



Pat used a beautiful drapery fabric with a ducks and leaves print, along with some Merimeko pink fabric, to create these blocks with her leaf shape. These will be samples for a class she'll be teaching in NYC.

Packing for PNQE

Priscilla and I spent most of one day last week getting all the garments ready for shipping to the Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza for the Special Exhibit "Wearable Art in Upstate NY" that we assembled.

We packed each of the 26 garments in its own giant Hefty bag along with its label and descriptive information.






Priscilla was in charge of the folding, and I packaged the items into the bags and boxes.


The show is September 16 - 19 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, PA.









Pat Pauly was quietly working away in the background, quilting a large quilt that would be sent off to her daughter as a birthday present.

















We know that June will enjoy and appreciate this wonderful piece that Pat started in one of Nancy Crow's workshops.

Opening for The Exquisite Corpse Exhibit

Nancy Hicks and Marcia examine and comment on one of the Exquisite Corpse pieces.  They were developed by a random scattering of three different panels to make a new wall hanging.

Two more of the random combination panels highlight a 90-degree interior angle where walls meet.

Several of the student visitors at the reception were interested in tracking the movement of individual panels as they observed each completed piece.









The student curator was present throughout the afternoon.  Her name is Anait, and she was born in Russia, moved to Brooklyn and has been at SUNY Geneseo for three years.  She will have two bacalaureate degrees at the end of the year and is exploring several options for next year.   Anait said she is interested in working in some area involved with developing nations.  She is fluent in Russian and Spanish, as well as English.

This is Jeanne Simpson's recently completed quilt.  It displays her usual strong use of lines and shapes and a wonderful color sense.

Installing The Exquisite Corpse

Here's the official invitation to come see our Exquisite Corpse exhibit.  We'll be there for the opening on September 7th, and the exhibit is open until October 4th.

Jennifer's Baby Shower

Bill's brother Jim and sister-in-law Doreen look on as their daughter, Jennifer, begins to open presents.  They have a home in the woods near Geneseo, and their outdoor pergola hosted the event on a beautiful day.

Jennifer is surrounded by some of the guests and a large pile of presents.  She is a high school counselor in Virginia and is expecting her first child in December.  Doreen's relatives are in the background.









Some of the grand-nephews think about a swim.  The pond looked inviting, and the central fountain adds an attractive focal point as well as providing needed aeriation.









Bill is attending his first baby shower.  As you can see, he was disappointed there weren't games to play, but overall enjoyed the day very much.  One of Doreen's nieces who came to the shower was a favorite student of his at Finger Lakes Community College some 30 years ago!

Heading for home

We were sorry that our short visit to the Adirondacks came to an end before we'd even had time to thoroughly test out the new porch furniture.

We planned a picnic lunch on our trip home and stopped at Hewitt Park on Route 3 outside of Carthage.   It's a small park, but very nice, and one of the two picnic tables was available for us.








The next stop was an important part of the itinerary -- Adirondack Artworks in Natural Bridge on Route 3.   I hadn't visited Nicole's store in a long time, and found she had her usual wonderful collection of  turquoise jewelry and other treasures!

Nancy and I both managed to put a little dent in our wallets!!
