Scenes from Aafke's house

 Our SAQA meeting was certainly enhanced by our beautiful surroundings at Aafke's home.

From the outdoor porch we could see the gardens and the restoration of one of the barns on the property.

A couple of Aafke's children had their weddings in the gardens, and one of the couples said their vows on this bridge.























Isn't this a neat coffee pot?










Aafke and her husband are from the Netherlands, and have their wooden shoes ready for work in the gardens.

















And one wooden shoe decorating the side door.










And I was flattered to see my Jet Trails #2 that Aafke owns displayed in our meeting room!

SAQA meeting

We had a regional "parlor" meeting of members of the Studio Art Quilters Association at the home of one of the members near Ithaca, NY last weekend.

This is part of Aafke's beautiful kitchen.














About 20 members were on hand to discuss their work and share ideas about their art and the organization.

In the perennial garden

Fall presents longer shadows, shorter days, and its own form of striking colors. 

The Japanese anenome waits all summer before this very nice display arrives -- Well worth the wait.










The zebra grass guards the entrance to the Zen meditation garden.  We like all our perennial grasses, and this one stands near the head of the class.













 The long wall of our perennial garden is well served by Russian sage, a large spruce bush, some bayberry, and more perennial grass with some nice towering plumes -- good contrast and color.











The fragrant, profuse blossoming autumn flowering clemantis covers the garden pergola.  Some morning glories climb the lattice as the chairs have been removed from the interior in preparation for inclement weather.

Larry, Curly, and Moe

This trio was aptly named by our friend, Karen.

They, or reasonable look-alikes, gather around their ceramic brother on a regular basis.

We assume they feel well protected, but must worry that he will catch all the flies!

Sewing with friends

 Our friends from Long Island, Marcia and Nancy, were able to come to the studio last week for a couple of sewing days.

Marcia used her beautiful shibori hand-dyed fabrics to work on Pat's Big Leaf pattern.











Pat helped Nancy with her composition, which is intended for the back of a new jacket.



















Nancy also worked with some fabric that she's had in her stash.














Bev created this pattern from a picture of her sumac tree and was putting some of her hand-dyed fabrics in place.







These are more of the great fabrics that Bev made, but that didn't get used for this project.












Marcia showed us this wonderful jacket that she made for her granddaughter.

Sewing days

Priscilla was at the studio a couple of times in August, and she shared some of the things she's been working on.

She tried out some ice dyeing and created this wonderful 2-yard piece.










She finished making the seminole strips for the edges of her quilt made from some spectacular molas.

















This is the start of a new jacket made from some vintage fabric she found in her stash.















And a new quilt that she's finishing up.

Quilts=Art=Quilts

I'm pleased that Jet Trails #11 has been accepted for the Quilts=Art=Quilts exhibit at the Schweinfurth Art Museum in Auburn, NY. 

This year, 77 quilts by 61 artists were chosen from 331 submissions by 190 quilters from around the world including the Australian, Canada,Germany, Israel, Japan, United Kingdom, and the United States. The exhibition will also include quilts by jurors Terry Jarrard-Dimond, Jan Myers Newbury, and Leslie Joan Riley.

The opening reception is Saturday, October 27, from 5 to 7 pm, and the exhibit runs through the end of the year.

SAQA Auction

 

I donated this 12" square quilt, Jet Trails #12, to the Studio Art Quilt Association's annual on-line auction.  The auction is going on this week and next week, and you can see and bid on wonderful art works at http://saqa.com/gallery-mini-detail.php?ID=2101

 

My quilt is one of several that were selected to be available for sale at the SAQA booth at the International Quilt Festival in Houston starting on October 31.



Art Quilts XVII

I'm pleased to announce that my Jet Trails # 8 has been accepted into Art Quilts XVII: Integrating a Paradox.

The exhibit will run November 2 through January 19, 2013, at the Chandler Center for the Arts in Chandler, AZ.

Woodsman's Field Days

While we were in the Adirondacks, we stopped in Boonville for the annual Woodsman's Field Days.

There were many competitive events and lots of vendors.  We didn't shop for any saws, but did discover some of the best donuts ever -- Yum!!














I wouldn't mind having one of these little trucks to replace my garden cart....











We saw some great examples of carving.








































And we checked out the Yurts that were for sale.

Harvest of the Arts

This event was held on a beautiful farm outside of Lowville, NY, on August 18.

There were several vendors, lots of kite-flying, and lots of activities for the kids.

This is the view from the house toward the barns.







We met Heather Barben and admired her tie-dyed wearables.












The stalls in this former stable were set up for the vendors.














This gentleman was riding/operating his pedal-driven bandsaw, and making wooden "cars" for the kids that they could then test out on the sloped race track.



















There were "train" rides for the toddlers.













The Lowville band was one of four musical groups that performed for the crowd.










This is the view back towards the house, and you can see several kids flying kites.
