Black Walnuts

I've been reading blog posts on http://www.artwithaneedle.blogspot.com/ about using black walnuts for surface design, and thought it would be fun to try some experiments too.

I have many memories of gathering and harvesting the nuts and storing them for use in baking throughout the winter. We would gather burlap bagfuls, which would then be run over with the tractor to loosen the outer husks. With rubber gloves on, the next step was to separate the nuts from the smashed husks. And even with being careful, it was inevitable that portions of clothes and hands would be stained.

Even though it has probably been 20+ years since I've been in the nearby woods, I found the tree and lots of nuts on the ground without much trouble. We've been having more rains that usual, so the ground was very wet.

I had taken only a couple of plastic bags with me, and manged to fill them up quickly.

Now I just have to decide what I'll do with them.
