Mohawk Valley Quilt Club

I had the opportunity to travel with Pat Pauly to the Utica, NY, area for her presentation to the Mohawk Valley Quilt Club.  We enjoyed meeting and gettting to know several of the Club members at dinner at Carmello's before the meeting.

Pat (in the lower left corner of the picture) and I joined the members of the Club for their regular business meeting and Show & Tell.

President Rose Degni ran the meeting, and you can see several of the items on the railing behind her that were made by members and brought in for Show & Tell.

Pat gave her usual excellent lecture, describing traditional to contemporary quilting with over 400 slides and also showing many of her quilts.  Here several Club members are getting a chance to see the quilts up close and talk with Pat.

Pat also brought some of her hand-dyed and shibori fabrics.  Claudia Visalli (in the orange sweater on the right) is the Club's Program Chairman and was our wonderful hostess for the evening.

Rochester Contemporary

I recently joined the Rochester Contemporary Art Center, and as a member, I will be participating in the up-coming member's show.

Here is the postcard announcement for the exhibition, which runs from December 4th through January 9th.

For more information on "RoCo", see http://www.rochestercontemporary.org/.

I submitted this piece for the exhibition: "Receding C's" (32" x 34")

Garden afternoon

There's always something to do in the gardens.

Bill trimmed the grape vines and the raspberry canes. Several new raspberry plants had "volunteered" over the last few years to start new homes under the grape vines. So we dug them up and moved them to the end of the raspberry row.

The whole day was a "Jet Trail" day, with lots of jet contrails in the sky. But the late afternoon was especially spectacular!

Studio Visitors - 3

Here's some more "show and tell" from our meeting:

Liz Anderson took a class with Judy Langille at the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center in Auburn on Torn Paper & Texture.

These are just a few of the great fabrics she made.

Bev Kondolf finished this piece based on the letter E with some of her wonderful quilting.

And this is another piece on shapes that Bev is working on.

Studio Visitors - 2

Some of us who made pieces for the recent Exquisite Corpse exhibit hung up our pieces for another look. Since each of the three squares in our sets had been randomly hung with others's squares, this was the first look at how each set looked by itself.

We decided that the sets could certainly stand on their own, and in a couple of cases, we liked the compositions oriented horizontally as well as (or even better than) vertically.

The piece on the left is by Priscilla Kibbee, and the one on the right by Pat Pauly.

This piece is by Nancy Hicks.

Bev Kondolf made this piece.

And this one is by Jeanne Simpson.

Studio Visitors

Nancy Hicks returned recently from a wonderful two-week trip to Japan, where she toured, took textile workshops, and spent time with friends.

She purchased this reversible hand-sewn cathedral-windows quilt. This is the back side.

Nancy made this piece of shibori fabric that she is showing to the group.  The other visitors from the left are Bev Kondolf, Jeanne Simpson, Liz Anderson, Pat Pauly and Priscilla Kibbee.

You can see the front of Nancy's quilt in the background.

Here's a detail view of her quilt.

One of the other things that Nancy brought back is this vest/top.  It is literally a rectangular piece of fabric, that has the two arm holes cut from it.  --super simple and very clever!

Bye Bye Bravada

I turned over my trusty Oldsmobile Bravada to my friend, Monica, as there's a new car on my horizon.

Monica parked it by her barn, and her dog, Trevor, came to check it out.

Monica lives in the Penn Yan area, and I saw several horse-drawn buggies that afternoon.

Several kitties make their home on the farm, and these two weren't shy about seeing what they might find in my bag.

Studio Visitors

We were able to schedule a day for Genie Barnes from Marcellus and Barb Ackley from Cortland to come for a visit. They joined Beth Brandkamp, Priscilla Kibbee and me for lots of chatting along with a bit of sewing.

Genie checked out some of Priscilla's new sari fabrics and made plans for a new jacket or two. On the cutting table in front of her, we spread out some boiled wool jacket pieces that Barb has been working on.

Barb also has been designing this piece which is destined to be included in a new garment.

Priscilla and Barb were auditioning some fabric trims for yet another jacket that Barb is working on.

Behind Priscilla you can see the quilt she has been quilting and binding that features batik panels from Nepal.
